MSCI approves rules that could eject Strategy, Metaplanet from equity indexes
The rules proposed in August would see companies that exist mainly to hold investments as no longer eligible for index inclusion.
MSCI has approved rules that could remove companies whose primary purpose is holding investments from its equity indexes, a move that would affect firms like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) and Metaplanet. Both companies are major corporate holders of bitcoin, and index exclusion could force passive funds tracking MSCI benchmarks to sell their shares. A trader would care because forced selling of these bitcoin proxy stocks could pressure their share prices and potentially weaken the equity-market demand channel for BTC.
